Quick Movie Review (Gran Turismo, Rush, & Black Rain)

Here’s a movie that I recently watched and deserves to be made a QMR for it.

  1. Gran Turismo

Dir: Neill Blomkamp
Prod: Doug Belgrad, Dana Brunetti, Carter Swan
Writ: Jason Hall, Zach Baylin, Alex Tse,
Cast: David Harbour, Orlando Bloom, Archie Madekwe, Darren Barnett, Djimon Hounsou, Emelia Hartford

Gran Turismo surprised me so much because the trailer looks “generic” & “bland”, the movie itself is fun, inspiring, and action-packed. Sure, it is not as good as “Rush” or “Ford V Ferrari”, but for a theatrical experience? It is a fun racing movie that I experienced since “Rush”, and the fact that this is based on a racing video game that doesn’t have any story is just mind-blowing. It is not a flawless movie there are some issues with the pacing and script, but still a fun biopic to watch

My Rating: B+

2. Rush

Dir: Ron Howard
Prod: Tim Bevan, Eric Fellner, Brian Oliver, Ron Howard, Andrew Eaton
Writ: Peter Morgan
Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Daniel Brühl, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara

Another racing movie that I very much love is this. This, Gran Turismo, and F1 are the reasons I wanted to make a racing movie. It is intense, emotional, fast-paced, and just like “Gran Turismo”, inspiring. Music from Hans Zimmer, the acting from Chris Hemsworth & Daniel Brühl, sound mix, and racing sequences are top-notch! This is how you make a biopic racing movie. What a masterpiece…

My Rating: A+

3. Black Rain

Dir: Ridley Scott
Prod: Stanley R. Jaffee, Sherry Lansing
Writ: Craig Bolotin, Warren Lewis
Cast: Michael Douglas, Andy Garcia, Ken Takakura, Yūsaku Matsuda

A first and pioneering genre where “An American stranded in Japan to investigate something bad happens”, Black Rain is a no-nonsense, brainless, neon lights color-filled yet somehow brutal neo-noir action film from an early Ridley Scott and music by Hans Zimmer (which includes some pieces of music he uses in The Dark Knight). Action sequences and cinematography are first-class. However, my only problem while Andy Garcia and Ken Takakura are great, and Yūsaku Matsuda, the problem here is Michael Douglas, who is basically in here, and the script itself feels like his character is supposed to be played by Mel Gibson, but they chose it to be played by Michael Douglas. Overall, it is fun, but it is an early Ridley Scott, so it doesn’t feel like any other Scott movie.

My Rating: B
